Tom Sawyer Island
Tom Sawyer Island, which is located in Frontierland across the Rivers of America, was opened in 1973. This Island playground, which is opened until dusk, can only be accessed by raft. To get there, guests board a motorized raft that can be found at the foot of Big Thunder Mountain Railroad. The ride itself only takes a few minutes.
Once on the island, children have the opportunity to run and play and let off steam. For example, they can explore dark caves and passageways, a bouncy rope bridge, and an old mine. Nonetheless, it is an ideal place for adults to sit and relax under the shade of pine trees, great oaks, elms, red maples, and sycamores. Meanwhile, the kids can play in its many attractions, including Fort Sam Clemens and the many fun caves.
The Island itself also makes for a great walk-through attraction. Many families enjoy crossing the barrel bridge in order to walk the dirt paths, to look at the working water wheel, and to relax on the many benches that dot the area.
Aunt Polly’s Dockside Inn is also located on Tom Sawyer Island. Here, guests can enjoy a picnic of ham & cheese sandwiches, peanut butter and jelly, cold fried chicken, ice cream, and lemonade.
Lines for the rafts leading back to the “mainland” can be quite long. Also, the island is not wheelchair accessible.
