Splash Mountain
Opened in 1992, Splash Mountain pays tribute to Walt Disney’s 1946 film, “Song of the South.” During this 12 minute ride is located on the west end of Frontierland, right between Big Thunder Mountain Railroad and Pecos Bill’s restaurant. During this fun ride, Brer Bear and Brer Fox each try to capture Brer Rabbit while he searches for his laughing place.
Guests of the Splash Mountain attraction ride in an eight-passenger log boat, which has been hollowed out by beavers, that takes them through swamps, caves and bayous. They also enjoy three small drops down the river, with the final plunge being a 52 foot drop through the Briar Patch. This drop simulates the Brer Rabbit’s escape from the Brer Fox. There are over 100 different audi-animatronic figures throughout this attraction and a camera captures the looks of excitement on guests’ faces as they take the 52 foot drop. These pictures can be purchased after completing the ride. In all, the ride contains five drops and three lifts.
Lines can be quite long for this ride and Fast Passes are available. During the busiest days, winding queues are opened to accommodate the guests. This line begins outside in partial shade, but does ultimately lead into a cool cavern. To avoid long waits, it is a good idea to enjoy the ride during parades.
The minimum height requirement for this ride is 40”, but parents can use the “switching off” option. Wheelchair guests can go on this ride if they are capable of transferring from their wheelchairs to the log boats. Most guests get wet on this ride, so keep that in mind on chilly evenings.
