Overview
Epcot, which stands for Experimental Prototype Community of Tomorrow, opened its doors in 1982. The premise of the park was created by Walt Disney himself, who sought to take “new ideas and new technologies that are now emerging from the creative centers of American industry" to create an amazing new attraction. The icon of Epcot, which is a shining geosphere, accurately represents this concept.
Epcot is comprised of two separate themed areas. The first area, “Future World,” displays attractions focusing on health, energy, communication, health, our environment and the land. It also includes displays about the ocean, transportation, imagination, and space exploration. One of the attractions, the “Universe of Energy” transports visitors to prehistoric times in order to discover energy as it is known today. The evolution of communication is explored in “Spaceship Earth.”
At the “Living Seas,” guests are treated to a 5.7 million gallon aquarium. Thousands of fish, as well as sea turtles, sharks, and dolphins, make their home here. Characters from “Finding Nemo” can be found at this attraction, as well as displays of the fish that helped inspire the creation of the film. Fantastic hands-on activities make this attraction especially enjoyable for kids of all ages.
Simba, Pumba, and Timon are the hosts at “The Land.” Here, guests get to watch the “Circle of Life” film, which focuses on the environment. An intriguing boat ride, entitled “Living With the Land,” can be taken while here. It provides tours of greenhouses and fish production. In addition, animatronic “Kitchen Karacters” provide an upbeat show about nutrition entitled “Food Rocks.”
The fun at Epcot continues at “Imagination!” Here, visitors take an enjoyable look at the five senses while taking a “Journey Into Imagination With Figment.” The “Mission Space” simulation takes guests on a space launch to Mars. “Honey I Shrunk The Audience,” a fantastic 3-D film, swoops visitors into the crazy world of professor Wayne Szalinski from the movie of a similar name. At “Test Track,” visitors get to take an amazing ride while learning about auto testing.
The second Epcot area, “World Showcase,” is centered around a reflective lagoon. This intriguing area provides an up close and personal look at 11 different countries. Guests can absorb the culture of these countries by dining on authentic cuisine, watching cultural performances, viewing significant exhibits, buying native items, and enjoying rides and movies reflective of each nation’s heritage.
Epcot also offers “Illuminations: Reflections of Earth” every evening. This presentation revolves around the lagoon within the World Showcase. Here, lasers, fireworks and dancing fireworks are choreographed along with inspirational music.
