Rafikis Planet Watch
Rafikis Planet Watch is a research and education center that is accessed by the Wildlife Express Train. The building itself is covered with large and colorful murals of animals (which also contain many Hidden Mickeys!). Inside, the building contains viewing areas where guests can watch exams and surgical procedures take place on animals.
Experts are also available inside to provide hands-on educational opportunities. Topics of discussion include learning how Disney cares for the animals and prepares their meals. A great deal of information about conservation efforts from organizations around the world is also available, as well as many interactive displays containing environmental information. Even animal cams located throughout the park can be watched on touch screens located within the center.
Guests also have the opportunity to interact with animals at the “Affection Section.” This area may seem like an ordinary run of the mill petting zoo on the surface, but it actually contains a variety of exotic breeds of deer, sheep, pigs, goats, and more. An adorable nearby elephant fountain allows guests to wash their hands afterwards.
For shoppers, the “Out of the Wild” shop provides a variety of conservation themed articles of clothing, as well as toiletries, snacks, stuffed toys, and books.
All of Rafiki’s Planet Watch is wheelchair accessible. Hearing impaired guests can utilize closed captioning at the Look-in Labs and at the Animal Cams. Closed Caption decoders are also available at Guest Services after placing a refundable deposit. In addition, Sign Language interpreters are available at animal performances. A Sign Language Coordinator needs to be called 2 weeks in advance at (407) 824-5217 to make arrangements.
